Turbid (cloudy) spun-gold brew with excellent head retention. Dry and
crisp with a honey-like aroma, fruity taste and clean aftertaste. Superb
summer beer garnished with a slice of fruit, like an orange or peach.
In Belgium, brewing was originally a farm activity, taking place in the
winter, when farm work was slowest. Since barley and wheat were staples,
they were often combined in beers brewed in late winter or early spring
for summer consumption. These wheat (wit) beers were seasoned with
herbs and spices either grown locally, like coriander and chamomile, or
imported, like orange peel from the Island of Curacao.
As American style lagers like Stella became more highly advertised in
Belgium, wit beer (white beer) came close to extinction. Pierre Celis,
a milkman from Hoegaarden resurrected the style in 1966. It became so
popular that Interbrew, now the owner of Budweiser, took over Celis’
ownership and built wit beer into a popular style worldwide. |
